The plasma membrane serves as a selectively permeable barrier between cell components and the surroundings.
It allows only selected material to move in and out of the cell thereby maintaining the cell's interior intact.
Rupture or break down of plasma membrane would result in the exposure of cell component to the external environment and would ultimately result in cell death.
